RSE Club Report – ‘We’re fools whether we run or not, so we may as well run!’

Highworth 5

RSE members at the Highworth 5

An 11:00am start in Highworth saw 17 RSE members taking on the scenic 5 mile loop mainly on flat, fast roads, with a sting-in-the-tail at the 4 mile marker! This year the race was part of Running Somewhere Else’s Championship and with the event starting and finishing at Warneford School was spectator friendly.

Well done to every runner and thank you to those who came and supported.

First four miles are a gentle down hill, so quite fast. However you know that the big hill is coming. I had decided to Jeff it (walk/run) and that definitely paid off. Lovely event with homemade cakes afterwards.

Anne Gardiner

Really enjoyed the race and the views. Decided to go quick in the first four miles which meant I could relax a bit for the hill. Great cake selection and great support from RSE too! šŸ°

Ben Chapman

Not actually a PB (as Anne put on the chat) but not far off and probably because I walked up that hill at mile 4 šŸ˜„

Anne-Marie Davies

Always an enjoyable race with the RSE runners. Lovely course (well, until mile 4) a great run and PB by 40 seconds so all in all a great day!

Alan Powderhill

I didnā€™t like the up but pleased to have completed it!

Southampton Marathon

The two-lap course of Southampton Marathon, beginning and ending at the Guildhall in the city centre, takes runners past the docks, then over the Itchen Bridge. Following a section by the shoreline at Weston Shore, the route then takes finishers inside St Mary’s stadium.

Congratulations to Zoe Markham-Lee who completed the course in RSE colours!

  • Zoe Markham-Lee – 4:30:09

Beat my PB by 20 minutes! So far this year I’ve done a 10 mile PB a 20 mile PB and now this! 2 lap course and loved going through St Mary’s.. I’m definitely having a few beers later to celebrate. Once I can walk that is… plus it was a long marathon!

Zoe Markham-Lee

Brighton Marathon

With incredible crowd support the Brighton Marathon gives runners a chance to experience a unique city-to-coast course taking them past iconic landmarks. A new route this year, the 2023 Brighton Marathon started at Preston Park, with the route going into Withdean before the turn back down the London Road towards the city. Once past the Pavilion, runners head up into Kemptown and then follow the coast to Ovingdean before a final turn back for a breath-taking view of the city, following the coast along the promenade and into Hove before finishing at Hove Lawns.

Well done to David Witnall and Phil Newman who ran for RSE!

  • David Witnall – 3:27:09
  • Phil Newman – 4:41:51

Brighton Marathon kicks off the large city marathon season with over 12,000 entrants. The route starts at Preston Park and meanders around the suburbs before heading down to the seafront at mile 8.

The course then follows the road out to the 13 mile turn point, and back past the Marina and the Steve Ovett statue (it was exciting for the running geek in me) at 16.

The course becomes pretty dull, in my opinion from mile 18 to 22, making up distance, before going past a lovely cheese warehouse/ shop and Fat boy slims house.

The last 2 miles are a case of head up and work your way down the prom as the finish line slowly gets closer.

In conclusion, how did my race go? Well, it was near on perfect, with pacing and a push with 10 kms to go resulting in a negative split, sub 3:30 and another medal for the drawer.

P.s thanks to Ellie for her support at the 6 different points, shame I didnā€™t see her every time!

David Witnall

Reading Half Marathon

The Unleashed Performance Reading Half Marathon not only takes in the highlights of the centre of Reading where runners experience huge crowd support but also still passes through the beautiful grounds of the University campus. The race culminates in a finish rarely found outside an Olympic stadium with over 15,000 people cheering you into the stadium and over the finish line.

Running the Reading Half today was Liz Hulcup.

  • Liz Hulcup – 2:02:13

It was a raw morning, a lot of waiting to begin with and a good walk to the start.  Lots of support all around the course, apart from the last mile, but finishing in the Madjeski Stadium being cheered on from the crowds in the stands.

RSE Club Report – Where there’s a Wil-tshire, there’s a 10 mile race…

Wiltshire 10 Mile Race

The second race in RSE’s championship series is a popular annual race amongst club members, the Wiltshire 10. Starting in Melksham, the course follows an undulating, but surprisingly fast course around the surrounding rural roads. Runners loop around the historic village of Lacock before following the River Avon back to the finish in Melksham. This year the race was a lot drier than last year’s torrential version, making it a perfect club day out!

A huge well done to all the club members who raced!

  • Mark Garrett – 1:06:31
  • David Witnall – 1:07:19
  • Nia Glover – 1:11:45
  • Elliot Gardiner – 1:21:25

  • Zoe Markham-Lee – 1:29:07
  • Nadine Brown – 1:30:26
  • Felicity Crotty – 1:47:13

Anna and I ran together for the whole race and helped each other to stick to the pace. It was Anna’s first 10 mile race so she did incredibly well. I was also pleased to improve my PB by 4 minutes.

Anne Gardiner

Was aiming for 8.15 pace as part of my marathon training plan, with no plans for a PB attempt today, so I was very pleased with the pacing. Ran with Paul Robertson to pace Alan Powderhill to a new 10 mile PB! šŸ’ŖšŸ¼ Nice little sprint finish with Darren Jenner at the end! Rewarded with cake at the finish line šŸ° šŸ˜‹

RSE Club Report – Palm Trees and Trophies!

Marrakech Marathon

This week we are celebrating the winners of our club awards, but one club member was missing, with a very good excuse, as Phil Southworth was racing the Marrakech Marathon!

More than 14,000 runners from all over the world headed to Morocco for the event, a race famed for its beautiful scenery – think alleys of palm trees! The single lap course follows the flat road through the city, to the side of the city’s 12th-century ramparts and through the Menara gardens.

Congratulations to Phil who completed the course in a brilliant time of 4:19:49!

There were more hills than I was expecting, and it was difficult to decide what to wear as it started in 4C, and ended in 12C!

RSE Awards Evening!

After a year of racing, cheering and support, it was time to celebrate at the annual RSE awards evening. The club crowned the winners of the RSE race championship in short stuff, endurance and overall specialisms, as well as announced the winners of the Most Improved and Rochelle Ravenscroft Runner’s Runner awards! It was a fantastic evening hosted at club HQ, Somewhere Else, with food from Asha’s Kitchen and a draw to raise money for the club charity, Cirencester Opportunity group (well done for winning the draw, Maria!).

A huge thank you to Nadine Brown and Tracey Pitts, who organised the celebrations and awards, Sarah Page for organising the charity draw, David Witnall, Elaine Chapman and Kevin Joynes-Creed for presenting, and to Pauline Tilbury, whose speech perfectly summed up the amazing achievements of the club in a surprisingly busy running year! Thank you also to Somewhere Else (and Sampo!) for the fantastic food and allowing us to (once again) take over the bar.

RSE Club Report – Festivities, Fast Courses and France!

La Rochelle Marathon

Tipped as the second largest marathon in France, the La Rochelle Marathon offers runners a chance to see 26.2 miles of the west coast, crossing through the city to theĀ historical port areas. The route features 2-laps of flat terrain, and is supported by lively crowds and bands every 2km.

Linda Edwards and Sarah Page ran in RSE colours, finishing in fantastic times!

  • Sarah Page – 4.25.10
  • Linda Edwards – 4.44.42

Flat course doing a figure of eight round the harbour and town- fantastic views of the town as we went round the harbour. Well organised and plenty of marshals.
Good crowds all along the course giving us loads of support, ten bands which were great and kept us entertained. The shouts of allez, allez were very encouraging!
Cathy gave us fantastic support , popping up three times round the course, so nice to see a friendly face.
Great goodies- a rose, 6 oysters, hot chocolate and a snazzy running jacket which we will be modelling at club soon.

Wilmslow festive 10k

The start of the festive season has begun! This popular Christmas-themed race starts in the town centre of Wilmslow before following a one lap course on scenic country roads, and then finishing on Mobberley Road/Sandy Lane. The first 5k is described as ‘lightening quick’, whilst the end half of the race features just one hill.

Running for RSE was Felicity Crotty, who completed the course in a brilliant time of 1:08:58!

We had nice weather and lots of festive outfits!

Felicity Crotty

AVR Half Marathon

This friendly, local half marathon has a great race atmosphere and festival feel. The course starts in Edington and then heads out to the beautiful villages of Steeple Ashton and Great Hinton. Expect undulating (hilly) countryside paths and a well supported race finish.

Running for RSE was Kevin Joynes-Creed, who completed the race in a great time of 1:57:17, a new course PB!

The AVR Wiltshire Half is one of my favourite Half Marathons. Positioned nicely at the end of November itā€™s perfect for one last blow out before the Christmas break. Despite the rather ā€˜bumpyā€™ route the scenery is great and the support & organisation from The Avon Valley Runners is second to none. On the back of little to no recent training Iā€™m pretty happy with a course PB and a sub 2hr finish for my last ā€˜competitiveā€™ half of the year šŸ„³

Eynsham 10k

The Eynsham 10k is a fast, flat two lap 10k course around the Oxfordshire village, making it a popular course for PB-seekers. The race is organised by Eynsham roadrunners and as part of the Oxfordshire County Championship, attracts a lot of club runners.

Completing the course for RSE and running great times were Kirsty Pitts and Ted Pitts!

  • Kirsty Pitts – 54:00
  • Ted Pitts – 55:38

A flat, 2 lap course around the pretty town of Eynsham. This race was part of Oxfordshire County championship with over 565 runners. It was great to see Liz Hulcup there cheering us along šŸ‘
