RSE Club Report – From 1-33!

Bourton 1 Mile Race

The Bourton mile always feels a bit different to other races, whether it’s that all ages race at the same time, the interesting start which is sometimes delayed due to the oncoming traffic, or that we never really train to run ‘just a mile’. Part of the Gloucestershire AAA road championship series, the race is popular, starting at Rissington Road before heading the mile course into the heart of Bourton. The race also featured in RSE’s very own championship, meaning the yellow vests were out in force!

Second race this week. So happy to be back racing with the Club after a long injury break. The Bourton 1 mile is to be feared as you know it is going to hurt ! However, it wasn't so bad. First in my age group and second County Gold this week and, as expected, a collective jolly vibe at the end with friends which makes it all worthwhile.
Sharon Smith
First ever one mile race! Flat course from the outskirts of Bourton village into the centre. Difficult one to judge the pacing on but was aiming for a sub 6.30 and my official chip time was 6.07! Very pleased! First time I’ve received a biodegradable medal too! It took less time to run the race than it took to eat the burger and chips at the pub afterwards! 🍔🍺😅

Marlborough Downs Challenges - 20 and 33 miles!

From one of the shortest races, to the very long! The MDC is a beautiful run along some of Wiltshire’s most picturesque countryside. The full 33 miles crosses some iconic sites, including the Wansdyke Path, Tan Hill Way, White Horse, and Cherhill Monument. The views are incredible and the silence of the countryside, far shot from any traffic pollution, is enough for any runner to add one of these races to their bucket list.

33 Mile Challenge

  • Lesley Hinsley – 6hrs 47 mins
  • Elaine Chapman – 6:47:22
  • Kevin Joynes-Creed – 7:09:45

It’s been quite a busy running week! First time running the MDC 20 and it really is a beautiful route at this time of year, made better with the hand crafted mug at the finish. I’ve not made many club sessions recently but I’ve really enjoyed seeing lots of RSE members at the various events over the last 6 days. And yes, I was attempting to get my name in the race report as many times as possible this week 😉
Nadine Brown
Lovely race with the lovely company of Elaine to keep me going all the way. She does actually stop talking about 20 miles in !🤣. The route started in Malborough centre, along the tails and canal path to Devizes, then more hills to Avebury, finishing at Malborough Leisure centre. Very friendly race with lots of checkpoints . Mostly self navigating, so a watch with Sat Nav or map essential.
Lesley Hinsley
Was absolutely delighted to get under 7 hours. Loved the race, so beautiful running through the woods with the bluebells, and some of the most fantastic views! Was a privilege to run with Lesley who kept me going, really appreciated her support. Only mishap being a tumble at around 31.5 miles, but kept going, no way was I stopping so close to the end!

RSE Club Report – Berkeley Bedtime Reading!

Berkeley 10k

With the Coronation celebrations (and springtime weather) over, RSE’s runners took to the quiet country roads of Berkeley for the village’s popular 10k race. Hosted by Dursley running club, the afternoon featured several kids races for a special Coronation Celebration festival. The 10k also featured in the Gloucestershire Country Championships as well as RSE’s very own championship! It was a wet but well supported run for our club runners.

Similar course to parts of the Fission 20 mile race but (thankfully) just the x2 5K laps starting and finishing at the old Berkeley power station. Still feeling tired from the London marathon so for my first race since I’m quite pleased with the pace. Good RSE turnout, runners and supporters, considering the rain! 🌧️ First race I’ve done where you get a beer instead of a medal! 🍺 I’m still not sure how I feel about that! 😅

RSE Club Report – A Long Run for a Long Weekend!

Pewsey Downs Around

Hosted by the Long Distance Walking Association, this event provides walkers and runners with a stunning via footpaths and bridleways with beautiful views across the Vale of Pewsey and Marlborough Downs. Entrants navigate themselves past many famous sites, including Avebury Stone Circle, Silbury Hill and the Wansdyke, on the 25 mile trek.

A huge well done to Lesley Hinsley, who completed the course in the first of 2 ultra runs within a week. Lesley finished the course in a brilliant 8 hours.

Yearly event organised by LDWA, starting at Pewsey Scout hut, going via white horse, Avebury, Malborough downs and round to Pewsey. 3100 ft of elevation. Ran/walked with a friend for 1st 14 miles. [I was then] on my own for the next 13 miles where watch, including sat nav, ran out of battery. Met 'Mike' who was on his first ever ultra, but he had Sat Nav. We ran together helping each other the rest of the way.
Lesley Hinsley

Isle of Wight Ultra

Because 35 miles is not enough for some, Lesley Hinsley took on the Isle of Wight Ultra, a 53km (33 mile) ultra from Chale to Cowes. Around 2,000 participants took on the run across the Island’s stunning coastal path, which has full support and hospitality along the way.

Congratulations to Lesley who completed the course in 6hours 41 minutes!

[This was my] 1st Ultra on my own - running 53km halfway around the IOW. Starting from Chale along the coast at Tennyson Down, along the trails and coastal path via the Needles, Yarmouth, Newtown, finishing in Northwood at the County ground. Fantastically organised event with Prosecco and meal at the end. Beautiful scenic views, lots of hills and very muddy trails. Lovely event.
Lesley Hinsley

Beyond the Ultimate Highland Ultra

RSE’s Andy Sampson also completed a multi-day ultra this weekend, crossing over 125km – the Beyond the Ultimate Highland Ultra!

Congratulations to Sampo, and hopefully we will get an update from him when he’s recovered!

RSE Club Report – London Calling!

The London Marathon

The London Marathon is one of the biggest events in the running calendar, with over 50,000 runners taking part in the 2023 event. The race is so popular that runners can go years without a successful ballot place (I know I’ve tried!), and for good reason – the course is unmatched for its atmosphere, entertainment and historical landmarks. The route has remained largely unchanged since its inaugural event in 1981, passing the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, Tower of London, London Eye, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace.

  • Sarah Hancock – 4:06:30
  • Sarah Page – 4:09:45 – New PB!
  • Darren Jenner – 4:10:31 – New PB!
  • Elliot Gardiner – 4:15:05 – First marathon!
  • Sandie Wood – 5:30:26
Congratulations to all of the runners who took part, and to the fantastic RSE support team!
This was my first proper marathon race, although I previously ran the virtual London marathon last year in a time of 4:38, so this was almost a 28 minute PB! I had hoped the weather would be dry but the weather was not kind and it rained for more than half the race. Felt good up to 20 miles but the started struggling with sore feet and cramp from then on. Couldn't believe how many people there were watching, although I never saw any of my supporters!!
Darren Jenner
With all the extensive training it felt like a long time coming but it definitely didn’t disappoint! Absolutely amazing atmosphere which definitely helped to keep me going! Not the time I was hoping for but still pleased with my overall pacing and as it was my first marathon it was still a PB! 😅 Great motivational support from RSE and from all my friends & family that travelled down to catch a glimpse of me! Shame I didn’t hear them shouting along embankment! 😂 Maybe I’ll try another one next year….🤔 I also managed to smash my fundraising target for KRUK which was an added bonus! Thanks to all who donated 😊
Elliot Gardiner
So happy to get a PB at London! Crowds were fantastic, lots of noise and support despite the drizzle. The drums in the underpasses definitely made you run a bit quicker! So well organised and lots of helpful marshalls. Massive thanks to the RSE supporters who were there as well as some of my London based family! I would just like to thank all the RSE members for all their supportive messages and to those who have helped me complete some cold rainy training runs!
Sarah Page

Corsham 10k

A fairly challenging course with multiple inclines. Super chuffed with the pace, helped out by fellow running pals.
Leah Brown

The Corsham 10k is now in its 40th year, hosted by Corsham Running Club with proceeds going towards local charities. The course starts at Corsham Football Club before heading out towards the edge of town, and climbing up Park Lane. Runners are then taken along country lanes to Neston before heading (mainly) downhill back to the football club.

A huge well done to RSE’s Leah Brown who completed the course in a brilliant time of 50:25.
