Pembrokeshire Endurance Life Half Marathon

As Britain’s only coastal National Park, Pembrokeshire is justifiably famous for its rugged cliffs, quiet coves, expansive sandy bays, picturesque coastal village and its abundance of marine life. The coastal trails here are wild and exposed, with undulating terrain and spectacular views. With a choice of 10K, half marathon, marathon or ultra course, runners are rewarded with beautiful views around each corner. Gareth Roberts took on the challenging half-marathon (which actually covers 15.1 miles) finishing in 2:57:57. Super work, Gareth!

Newport Marathon and 10k

Sunday saw the inaugural Newport Marathon takes place. Drawn up by double Olympic marathon runner, Steve Brace, the route claims to be one of the flattest and fastest marathon courses in the UK. The 26.2 mile route offered iconic landmarks, coastal wildlife and picturesque medieval villages.

Over 3,400 people took part with Andy Masser representing RSE and finishing in an impressive 3:34:00. Fantastic work, Andy!

Ruth Herbert and Kate Potter traveled to Newport on Sunday to support those racing in the Marathon but not wanting to miss out on Wales’ largest weekend of running they completed the inaugural ABP Newport Wales 10k. And didn’t they do well! Both achieving personal bests and Kate finishing 2nd in her age category. Ruth, 56:41 (PB) and Kate, 59:41 (PB; 2nd F65-69). Awesome work ladies!

Blenheim 7k

Over 1800 people took part in the Blenheim 7k fun run at Blenheim Palace, Woodstock in Oxfordshire on Sunday. Becky Heal, who has just returned to the club via the beginners course, did herself and RSE proud completing the course in 1:15:58. Keep up the good work, Becky!

Brighter Futures Superhero 5k Run

Our own superhero Elspeth Murano completed the single loop around scenic Coate Water Park, also on Sunday. Brighter Futures is a charity raising funds for a radio therapy unit in Swindon, as currently people requiring radio therapy treatment have to drive to Oxford. Well done, Elspeth!

Charity Quiz Night – 19th April 2018

Running Somewhere Else hold charity quiz for Churn and celebrate 10x10k challenge achievers

RUNNING SOMEWHERE ELSE HAD A FUN FILLED EVENING ON APRIL 19TH AT THEIR CHARITY QUIZ NIGHT RAISING FUNDS FOR LOCAL CHAIRTY ‘THE CHURN PROJECT’ AND CELEBRATING THEIR MEMBERS ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE 10 X 10K CHALLENGE HELD THROUGHOUT 2017.

The event, held at the Somewhere Else bar, was attended by over 50 people including club members, friends and family and featured 7 rounds of questions including categories ‘Ding-dong’, ‘Cats’ and of course a ‘Running’ specific final round!

Seven teams battled to win the prizes on offer and thanks to a storming final round ‘Team Duathlons’ surprised everyone, including themselves, to finish in 1st place.

2017 saw Running Somewhere Else turn 10 years old and to celebrate this milestone the RSE committee challenged their members to run ten 10k’s throughout the year (January – December).

During the evening Club Coach Dave Whitlow made the presentations to the 24 members who had successfully completed this 10x10k Challenge, 3 of whom, amazingly, had already completed the challenge in June! They received a commemorative running t-shirt which features the clubs 10th anniversary logo and a list of the various 10k’s that were completed around the world!

The club used the event, primarily, to raise funds for their charity of the year, The Churn Project. The quiz raised over £100 for the charity. The next event RSE will be using to raise funds will be Fairford 10k on June 3rd. Places are still available for those wishing to join the 10k race which is also part of the Gloucester AAA road race series for 2018; head to the clubs website for more details.

Club Chair Caroline Coates said: “We all had a fantastic time at the charity quiz evening. It was wonderful to recognise the achievements of our members and enjoy a really good quiz with friends whilst raising money for The Churn”

“I’d like to thank all those involved in organising the event and to Somewhere Else for hosting us.”

RSE Racing Report – 22nd April 2018

London Marathon

London Marathon runners faced record temperatures for the grueling 26.2 mile race on Sunday. The mass race kicked off at 10 am and temperatures hit 23C – making it the hottest London Marathon on record. Runners faced uncomfortable conditions, but the sunshine and warm weather was expected to lead to one of the biggest crowds ever turning out to cheer on the 47,000 runners.

This years RSE club place went to the ever inspiring Mark Manley who, as always, did RSE proud completing the distance in 3:43:57 before requiring medical attention! We are pleased to hear all is well now and he will no doubt be back racing again very soon, knowing our Mark!

Andy Sampson, who received last year’s club place but deferred until this year, also put in a stellar performance finishing in 4:09:00. Although it may not have been the time hoped for, remember you can only control the controllable Andy, and your effort, attitude and focus was spot on!

RSE member Debbie Rees-Jones ran for charity raising over £8000 for Macmillan. Such a fantastic achievement Debbie, well done, as is the finishing time of 5:15:03.

A final mention to Matt Lambourne who had also deferred his RSE club place from 2017 to run this year, now under his new club Cheltenham and County Harriers, he finished in 3:55:06.

Congratulations to all of you, such incredible times in the tough conditions.

RSE Racing Report – 15th April 2018

Brighton

Sunday saw 9 RSE members complete the marathon and 1 complete the 10k. Both the marathon and the 10k started in Preston Park and finished along the seafront.

Since its inauguration, the Brighton Marathon has grown dramatically to become the Brighton Marathon Weekend. The course bests for the men and women are well under 2hrs10min and 2:29, making it the second-fastest marathon in the UK. It is also the second-largest marathon in the UK and eighth-largest in Europe. Following a muggy start, the wind and rain set in but this was welcome following such a warm day on the Saturday. Provisional results as follows.

First home for the club was Nadine Brown in 3:44:24, achieving a new PB. Dave Daniels completed the 26.2 in 3:45:16 (SB) followed by Dave Whitlow in 4:03:00 (SB). Elaine Chapman came home in 4:14:52 (SB) closely followed by Gareth Roberts achieving a fantastic new PB in 4:15:10. First timers Rosie Oates and Emma Hine both did RSE proud achieving 4:44:33 and 4:45:46 respectively; Rosie has also raised a fantastic amount for Cystic Fibrosis. Amanda Tyler completed her second marathon in a course PB of 5:11:13 (SB). Also running for charity was Jules Macfarlane who finished in 6:32:56 (SB) despite picking up an injury on the course. Well done everyone, you are all incredible!

In 2014, the super-fast BM10k was added to the weekend schedule and immediately stamped its importance on the rankings with the second-fastest time in the country that year. The course is fast and flat, taking participants through the city centre and finishing at the same finish as the Marathon, on Madeira Drive. Ben Chapman took part in the 10k, enjoying the cheering marathon crowds and completed the course in 47:27. Great work Ben!

Resolution Run

Elspeth Murano and Andy Masser completed this fantastic run in aid of the Stroke Association. This charity event, held at Lydiard Park, raises money to support people who are living with the impact of stroke. Well done Elspeth for completing the 10k! Andy Masser completed the 15k in 1:12:26, great work Andy!
