Westonbirt 10k: Run for the Trees

Over 900 runners took part in this year’s Run for the Trees organised by the Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum with a route that takes you passed champion trees and some of the rarest species in the world. Unfortunately, a change in how numbers were collected resulted in a delayed start and the slightly longer than 10k route put an end to beating any PBs on Wednesday evening; but RSE members still put in some fabulous runs.

First home for the club was Cheri Edwards in 52:20, Jo Woods 53:53, Lindsay Gregory 54:30; Richard Marshall 57:33; Vicki Mason 58:18; Amanda Haines 1:09:43 and Amy Breakspear 1:17:19. Well done everyone!

Special mention to Amanda Haines who not only raced for RSE for the first time, but in doing so completed her furthest ever run after enrolling on the beginners course. Fantastic work, Amanda!

Bermuda Day Half Marathon

Friday saw the Bermuda Day Half Marathon take place, which runs from Somerset to Hamilton on the beautiful island of Bermuda. With incredible organisation and support the whole way round, Tom Cooper ran in the hot and humid (and certainly not flat!) conditions to finish in an impressive 1:32:52. Great job Tom, now enjoy the rest of your holiday!

Dauntsey 10k

RSE Racing Report – 20th May 2018

Berkeley 10k

There was a good turnout of RSE members taking part in a very warm Berkeley 10k on Monday 14th which is a flat, PB potential, course run on quiet country lanes around rural Berkeley. Tom Cooper ran an impressive 38:42, a new PB, to finish first for the club. Steve Phelps was next across the line in 47:13, followed by Martin Pitts in 48:58. Racing for the first time since becoming a dad was Graham Aitchison who finished in 51:11, closely followed by RSEs first lady Kirsty Pitts in a seasons best 51:27. Emma Hine took on the 10k for the first time and did so in a fantastic 55:23 (PB). Lovely Linda Edwards also ran for her 1st claim club, Bourton Road Runners, and finished in 56:20. Great work team.

Northleach 10k

Kate Potter and Jenny Hoffmann took part in this beautiful 10k in the North Cotswold countryside featuring fields of buttercups and rolling hills. They were greeted by great marshalls and plenty of water to drink and douse themselves with on a very warm Sunday morning. The race is in aid of Walking with the Wounded charity. Well done ladies for completing the race in 1:12:00 (awaiting official time).

Royal Berkshire 10k

Sunday saw the Green Park Royal Berkshire 10K start and finish by the lake in Green Park, Reading. The course is a one lap rural route around Pingewood lakes. It is flat and on good surfaces with very few twists and turns making it a fast route. Charlie Austin completed this in a new PB of 1:15:10. Well done, Charlie.

Race for Life

Elspeth Murano completed the Swindon Race for Life 5k on Sunday morning. The route, which meanders around Lydiard Park, taking in views of the house and lake, is two laps and is primarily on pathways with two short sections on mowed grass. The route has a section through the woods which includes a short sharp incline. Great work Elspeth for such a worthwhile cause.

Also raising valuable funds for beating Cancer was Kay Thompson who completed the Race for Life Pretty Muddy again in Lydiard Park, Swindon. This is a brilliant 5k muddy obstacle course which includes scrambling over the A-frame and crawling through the mud pit. Well done, Kay!

Tough Mudder

In the shadow of the historic Belvoir Castle, 16,000 acres of picturesque countryside was transformed into a mud-lover’s playground on Saturday. Taking on the 10 miles and 20+ obstacles in the Midlands were RSEs very own gladiators Gareth Roberts and Julia MacFarlane. Awesome work guys!

Rough Runner

Helen Berry and friends took on Rough Runner in Oxfordshire also on Saturday which includes a variety of inflatable obstacles and the ‘Travelator’! Well done, Helen!

parkrun

Cirencester: Jon Collins 25:58 and Karen Langfield 41:48.

RSE Racing Report – 13th May 2018

Shakespeare Half and Full Marathon

Sunday turned out to be a glorious day, especially for those running the half or full marathon in Stratford-upon-Avon. Starting in the centre of the town, opposite Shakespeare’s old school, taking in sights such as the River Avon, Holy Trinity Church (home to the grave of William Shakespeare) and the Royal Shakespeare Theatres.

Just under 500 participants ran in the two-lap marathon course. First home for the club was Dave Witnall in an impressive time of 3:28:03, followed by Marathon first-timer Ellie Taylor in 4:04:40. What a fantastic time and achievement, very well deserved.

Over 1600 runners took part in the half marathon, which started at the same time. Teresa Hazelwood raced this distance for the first time in 4 years, thoroughly enjoying the event and finishing in a super 1:50:15! Like his sister, Ellie, this was a first time for Rich (Ryo) Taylor who took on the half and did so in 2:05:12.

Well done everyone, awesome work.

Simplyhealth Great Bristol 10k

Over 10,000 took to the streets of Bristol on Sunday; starting near Millennium Square the route runs parallel to the historic Bristol Harbour before continuing along Avon Gorge and taking in the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge. Ollie Hazel ran with his sister, who was completing her first 10k event, and together achieved 1:15:22. Becky Heal also ran in RSE colours finishing in 1:36:35. Great going guys!

Stroud Trail Quarter

Although 7 miles and not exactly the quarter marathon, this is advertised as a great introduction to trail running and takes in some of the great Cotswold views at the same time. Starting from Stroud town centre, the race joins the Cotswold Canal towpath ascending, eventually, to Rodborough Common before returning to the finish in Stroud. In a field of 100, this event is also open to walkers, with Cheri Edwards and Lindsey Gregory running for RSE. Cheri finished 8th female overall in 1:08:41 and Lindsey 9th in 1:10:00 (2nd in her age category). Amazing work ladies!

Hogsmill 5

The “Hogsmill 5” is a friendly ladies-only running race over 5 miles, organised each year by the Epsom Allsorts ladies running club. With no cut-off time it’s a perfect target for beginners, and enjoyed by established runners too. The race is mostly flat, with start and finish at the Harrier Centre athletics track in West Ewell, and running through the Hogsmill local nature reserve behind. Charlie Austin took her RSE vest for its first outing at this one completing the 5 miles in 59:12. Well done, Charlie – fantastic first race in RSE colours!

Ridgeway 40 Walk

Organised by the Walkers Association the Ridgeway 40 is a walk not a race but there are lots of runners with times starts rather than mass start. Henry Church attended this on Saturday completing the distance in 6 hours 53 minutes, 7 minutes inside his target! Fantastic Henry!

RSE Racing Report – 7th May 2018

Two Tunnels Half

‘Relish Running Races’ organise a range of different half marathon events over the summer varying in terrain. Jonathan Lewis was among 278 runners to take on the ‘Return Ticket’; a two lap out and back course along the Two Tunnels Greenway path. Well done to Jon, who took advantage of it being lovely and cool in the long tunnel, achieving a time of 1:48:03. Awesome!

Original Mountain Marathon (OMM)

The OMM Lite was held over Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th May in the Forest of Dean. Competitors have to find as many checkpoints as they can in their allocated time, each having different values and the highest score wins. Martin Sheriff and Jessica Osbourne took on the orienteering, covering 18 miles in 5 hours on Saturday to achieve a fantastic 11th place at the halfway point. Sunday saw them complete 14 miles in 4 hours, Martin disappointingly admitting, “I may have got us lost!” Still, it was an impressive 27th place finish, having collected 480 points in 8:30:10 over 32 miles! Great work guys and maybe worth considering for a social RSE weekend away next year?!

Oxford Greenbelt 10k

This friendly, fundraising, off-road 10k was held on Saturday in the Oxfordshire countryside. It welcomes runners, joggers and walkers and this year raised money for a group of Scouts to go to the 2019 World Scout Jamboree. Elspeth Murano took part in this worthwhile cause; well done, Elspeth!
