RSE Club Report – Cold Races and Cold Turkeys!

Linda Franks 5 Mile

Runners need to be incredibly quick if they want to enter the Linda Franks 5 Mile race, as it’s always guaranteed to be a sell out – not for the scenery, but for the very flat course with plenty of downhill, including the downward sprint to the end. Thankfully there were plenty of speedy RSE runners who were quick to enter, securing their place in the 1st club championship race of the year! Team RSE were brilliant, many achieving PBs and age category rankings.

I enjoyed the course today as lots of turns and short sections made it more interesting, as well as being there with all the other fabulous club runners!

Steve Sandercock

I really enjoyed the race. It was lovely running past people standing on the end of their drive ways cheering you on, words of encouragement written in chalk on the roads and really friendly marshalls. Great to be with everyone from RSE too.

Liz Farooq

Chalford Cold Turkey 10k Race

Held from Chalford Hill Primary School, the Cold Turkey race is tipped as muddy and very hilly! There were options for 5k and 10k races on the day, with the majority of runners opting for a 5k.

A huge congratulations to Andrew Kewley for running in RSE colours for the first time! Andrew finished the 10k course in a brilliant (unofficial) time of 78 minutes!

Well done also to Jon Collins, who finished the course in a fantastic time of 55:48! It’s Jon’s first race back with Running Somewhere Else – welcome back!

[The] course was up & down to say the least – half off road too – cold & dry! Just needed to break my duck to give me a bit of confidence.

Andrew Kewley

Well done, Andrew and Jon!

Don’t forget that it’s RSE’s 2021 Championship prize giving this Wednesday (26th January) in the Somewhere Else pub garden! The prize giving starts at 6:30pm – it would be lovely to see as many RSE runners as possible to congratulate our winners.

Welcome to the Club!

As we enter the new year and the Beginner’s running group starts, RSE are excited to welcome all the new (and returning) members who have signed up so far in 2022! Whether you run for fun, friendship or fitness, we are glad to have you on board!

Here are some sign-up inspirations from some of our newest members:

Annual Awards

A date for the diary – 26th January 2022

A message from the Chair, Pauline Tilbury:

Sadly we have decided to cancel our social awards evening (previously booked for Sat 29th Jan). I have consulted with the committee and we feel that it’s the sensible and responsible thing to do in the current Covid situation.

We will replace this with a presentation of the awards at 6:30pm on Weds 26th Jan at the club session – hopefully in the garden at Somewhere Else, (actual location tbc).

We will spend 15 mins or so doing the presentations and start the efforts session late. We will be outside and you have the option to wear masks whilst gathered.

RSE Race Report – Mud and Trails!

Hair of the Dog

An aptly named race for the start of the new year, the Hair of the Dog trail race took place on the 3rd January between Chippenham and Lacock. The event is known for its picturesque route along the River Avon and an incredible medal!

Taking on the route for RSE was Zoe Markham-Lee and Sharon Smith!

Hard, muddy and very ‘traily’!

Zoe Markham-Lee

[It’s] a 7.75 mile trail race between Chippenham and Leacock. [It] runs along the river Avon and onto Reybridge and along the towpaths of the Wiltshire and Berkshire Canal. Downside: About 10 styles! But otherwise lovely!

Sharon Smith
  • Sharon Smith – 1:05:03 – 1st LV60! πŸ₯³
  • Zoe Markham-Lee – 1:28:00

Incredible running from both of you!

Cotswold Farm Park Gloucestershire Cross Country Championships

Cross country races are known to be tough, muddy and hilly, and the weather on the 8th January only added to the difficulty of the Gloucestershire AAA race, but that didn’t stop Fran Penny, Sharon Smith and David Witnall taking on the challenge! Held at the Cotswold Farm Park, the race was this year’s Gloucestershire County Cross Country Championship.

For those of you who are new to cross country races, there a different distances for men (approx. 10.2k) and women/VETs (Approx. 6.75k).

Women’s/VETs Race:

  • Fran Penny – 37:54
  • Sharon Smith – 39:17 – 1st LV70! πŸ₯³

Men’s Race:

  • David Witnall – 49:28

The course had a little bit of everything, lots of small ups and downs, mud, wind and rain. A good course without being too hard so suited new and experienced cross country runners. Personally I had great fun, with my fitness not being great at the moment, my aim was to enjoy the occasion of a County Championships. Well done to Fran and Sharon our lady club representatives!

David Witnall

Well done for braving the bad weather!

January Jaunt 10k

Held in Plympton, the January Jaunt is a 10k multi-terrain race that starts and finishes at Plymouth Speedway track. Taking place on the 9th January, the course was an out and back to Saltram House.

Felicity Crotty ran for RSE, finishing in an brilliant time of 1:03:34! (unofficial)

I ran the January jaunt which is a 10k around the trails at Saltram in Plymouth. A nice route which was an out and back (mostly uphill out), ran with my friend Jennie.

Felicity Crotty

Well done Felicity!
