Mentioned in Dispatches

Some great running from everyone this weekend with a lot of new PBs being set. However Linda Edwards set a new PB in her park run on Saturday. This meant that she has set a new PB in every distance from 1 mile to marathon this year. An outstanding year from Linda that will no doubt inspire many runners. Well Done.

Severn Bridge 5 Mile Night Race

The Severn Bridge 5 mile light race took place on Wednesday 6th November.

Runners started on the Severn Bridge and ran on the downstream pedestrian access-way, along the full length of the bridge then crossed over the toll booth plaza bridge to gain the upstream side. They then ran down a footpath at the side of the Aust Services and gained the upstream pedestrian access-way which followed all the way back to the other side with a convenient finish in the underpass. Apparently it is impossible to get lost in this race.

RSE Race Report Sunday 3rd November 2019

Abbot NYC Dash to the Finish 5k

At the Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K on Saturday 2nd November runners had the chance to be part of the world-famous TCS New York City Marathon. Runners got to run through the streets of Manhattan, and finish at the famed Marathon finish line in Central Park—without running 26.2 miles!

Representing RSE was Mark Manley who was unfortunately not able to take part in the marathon due to injury. That didn’t stop him completing the race in a new PB of 18:19 and at the same time managing to beat Paula Radcliffe who finished in 19:02. A famous scalp to add to his list. Well done Mark.

Gloucester 24 hr Track Race

24 hours on a 400 metre track in Podsmead, Gloucester! A historical event last recreated in 2014. It was 37 years since the world record was set on the same track which still stands as the current British record of 170 miles 974 yards (274.480 kms) set by Gloucester runner.  Entry for the race which took place on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd November was by invitation only.

RSE runner Henry Church was fortunate enough to get an invitation to take part in the event. I doubt there would have been many runners disappointed in not getting an invitation. Over a very wet and windy 24 hours Henry managed to complete 161.6 km or 100.41358 miles. Fantastic effort Henry. An amazing display of both physical and mental endurance.

Guy Fawkes 5

On Sunday 3rd November the Guy Fawkes 5 mile race took place in Tewkesbury. This was a flat course with just two bridges to cross on country lanes with very little traffic.

Representing RSE was Rosie Oates who finished in a new PB time of 35:45 and came 1st in the SL category. She was followed by;

Dave Whitlow who finished in a time of 36:10 and came 4th in the MV55 category.

Sarah Page who finished in 44:18

Great running from you all well done.

Bideford 10 mile

The Bideford 10 mile race took place on Sunday 3rd November. The course started and finished very close to the Bideford Amateur Athletic Club Clubhouse and took in magnificent views of the Taw and Torridge estuary. The course headed out on roads and returned on the Tarka Trail. The race was moderately flat, with only three small inclines.

Representing RSE in what he has said is likely to be his last event in and RSE vest was Tom Cooper who completed the race in a new PB time of 1:04:36

Well done Tom

Mentioned in Dispatches

This was pretty easy for me to decide on this week.

Firstly Henry Church. Running 100 miles over a 24 hr period in bad weather is a great feat in itself. To do it around a 400 m track shows great physical and mental determination. A fantastic effort which included a PB over a marathon distance as well.

Rosie Oates managed to set yet another PB on the weekend. This time a new PB over 5 miles. She also came first place in the SL category of the Guy Fawkes 5.

Finally I have to include Tom Cooper. Running his last in RSE colours Tom set a new PB over 10 miles. Clearly being a new dad hasn’t slowed him down at all. Tom has been a great member of RSE and he will be missed. I am sure he will be visiting on a regular basis and I wish him the best at his new club.

Finally Mark Manley purely for beating Paula Radcliffe.
