The camels are the sweepers that follow the last of the runners – so you want to make sure you stay ahead of them, not follow them!
Laura’s still alive – if you don’t know by now she’s only doing the bloomin’ Marathon Des Sables! The first day was due to be tough as it took in 15km of sand dunes in todays 34km stage, just to start things off on the right foot. Laura finished a very respectable 815th of 1149 competitors in 8hrs 20min. She even managed a smile coming over the line:
She had promised to do an ‘Andy Sampo’ double thumbs up when she crossed the line – but it was too much for the bloomin’ webcam that glitched just as she crossed the finish!
Don’t forget you can still sponsor her – it’s all in aid of Swindon’s Prospect Hospice: http://www.justgiving.com/sumoeddie
And you can follow her progress each day via the athlete tracker (she’s number 706): http://www.marathondessables.com/resultats/resultats.php?langue=en&epreuve_id=2014
See if you can spot her coming over the finish line each day on the live webcam: http://www.marathondessables.com/en/2014-03-31-16-12-46/live-webcam.html
And perhaps, most importantly, you can keep her spirits up by sending her an email via the MDS website (which get handed out to the runners each evening): http://www.marathondessables.com/en/live/write-to-a-competitor.html
Email from Laura herself:
Hello! still alive, sat typing in the dark. Think I did 8:20. Hard, hard day. 34k including 15km of bloody dunes. No blisters yet. My tent mates are fab – 5 women, 3 men incl a fencing coach who’s running with a foil. Crazy Japanese running dressed as a cow. It’s really hot in the day and FREEZING at night. Please pass on thanks to everyone who’s sponsored me XXX
